VU University Amsterdam (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)

We propose the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU University Amsterdam) as the venue for the ISRS 2011.  'Vrije Universiteit' means 'Free University’ and 'free' refers to freedom of state and church interference. VU University Amsterdam was established in 1880 by orthodox protestants.
VU University Amsterdam is a rapidly growing university with over 17,000 students and 2,000 academic staff, from the Netherlands and abroad. Responsible scholarship has been a been priority at the VU for the past 127 years. Conducted by groups drawn from different disciplines, high-quality research programs continue to attract greater national and international recognition. Both the research and the teaching at the VU are conducted in the service of society.

The university campus and university hospital are situated in the south-western part of Amsterdam, one of the most dynamic and fast-growing business districts of the Netherlands. The international airport of Schiphol-Amsterdam is only 10 kilometers away, just 8 minutes by train. The VU is easily be reached by car, train, tram, express tram/metro and bus.

Lecture halls

Aula

The Aula will be used as plenary lecture room. It has a capacity of 900 seats (including 250 on the balcony). The Aula is equipped with all modern audiovisual facilities and has a large stage.

Catering and exhibition area

Around the Aula and in the immediately adjacent foyer, there is plenty of space for the meeting exhibition. We also plan to have all morning coffee breaks and lunches in this area. Having both exhibition and catering in the same space will certainly be appreciated by sponsors and delegates.

Workshops rooms

For the afternoon workshops, smaller rooms will be used, e.g. the Auditorium which is located directly opposite to the Aula. The Auditorium is a modern lecture room with a flexible set-up. The maximum capacity is 280 seats (including 80 seats on the balcony). Further workshops will be scheduled in lecture halls of the VU University Amsterdam(capacity ranges from 66 to 350 seats).

TenT

We plan to schedule the posters in the TenT building, situated next to the main building of the VU. During the academic year it is used as exam hall, and for the ISRS 2011 it will be very suitable as poster area. Coffee, tea and drinks will be served during the poster sessions.
